Smashed Poturnators or Adventures with CSA

Week 2 resulted in these beautiful vegetables:

The new vegetable this week was turnips. Now I know what turnips are, but I have never liked them. As the new vegetable this week, I had to try them again. So I made Smashed Poturnators, which is just turnips and red potatoes mashed together with some butter. They turned out well. The turnips gave a little kick to regular potatoes.

Scallions, basil, arugula, green lettuce, peas, zucchini, summer squash, kousa squash, cucumber, radishes, Hakurei turnip

(And yes, for those of you paying attention, I'm posting a week behind.)

Lessons in Falling

Another set of oldies, but goodies.

The Counter Project

How to inexpensively change a counter top you hate:

Step 1: Scour stores (or the internet) until you find a pattern of contact paper you like, or at least like better.

Step 2: Clean the counter thoroughly.

Step 3: Slowly, and carefully begin placing the contact paper on the counter. I recommend using a plastic scraper to help smooth the paper. It's about $2 at your local hardware store, and great to use for perfect edges.

Step 4: Repeat for the whole kitchen, and voila! A new look for a minimal price. Just be extra careful about putting hot items directly on the counter. But if you do, use it as an excuse to try another pattern. The contact paper should remove very easily from the counter top allowing you to change your mind and change your paper.

Pool Party

Doesn't he look so pathetic waiting for the nice weather so he can play outside?

Old photographs and places I remember

I am currently working on a project that requires browsing through old photos. This one I had to share:

The dog under the table belongs to my parents, and yes, he is stuck under there.

My Adventure with Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

Tuesday around 3:45 pm, I grab my big reusable bag (freebie in the mail!) and head out to the car. I drive to Farmer Dave's. I enter the barn, check off my name, and off I go to pick out my veggies. I love the crates of veggies sitting waiting to be picked through. The smell is so fresh, and makes me feel excited for dinner. When I'm done, I say bye, and out the door I go, off to check out my new items. It's the best kind of shopping, as the money was exchanged months ago, so it feels free!

I made a goal for this experience that I will pick out a new item each week. Last week's newbie was purslane. I made a purslane and potato salad. It was delicious. The purslane adds an extra kick to regular potato salad.

Veggies: Radishes, zucchini, cucumber, peas, garlic snape, lettuce, purslane, cilantro, spinach

Our Table

We've had it for about 2 months now, but I've had a couple of requests for pictures. So here you are:
